Maxi Bio-

Music insiders might argue there’s a vast array of genres and categories, suggesting little common ground between them. However, the truth is people gravitate towards music and rhythms that resonate with them, regardless of their backgrounds. As Maxi Priest has shown throughout his career, music is a universal language. With 10 albums and countless live performances worldwide, Maxi has created a one-world sound that heals, rejuvenates, and uplifts audiences everywhere.

Growing up as the second youngest of nine children, Maxi was deeply influenced by his family’s Jamaican roots. His father worked as a factory steelworker in London, while his mother was a dedicated Christian missionary and lead singer in their church choir. Maxi was exposed to gospel, reggae, R&B, and pop music from a young age. He started his musical journey as a carpenter, building speaker boxes for a local reggae sound system, and soon began singing at live dancehall sessions. His big break came in 1984 when he co-produced Philip Levi’s “Mi God Mi King,” the first UK reggae tune to top the Jamaican charts. Maxi’s career soared with hits like “Some Guys Have All the Luck” and his cover of “Wild World.” Albums like Bonafide and collaborations with Roberta Flack and Shabba Ranks brought him further acclaim. By the mid-90s, Maxi was celebrated for his ability to blend hardcore reggae with mainstream pop. His 1996 album, Man With The Fun, featuring the Grammy-nominated track “That Girl” with Shaggy, solidified his status as a global reggae ambassador. His 1999 album, CombiNation, showcased his versatility, incorporating reggae, hip-hop, R&B, rock, jazz, and pop. Maxi’s success continued into the 2000s with hits like “Full Hundred” and “Sweat A Go Buss” from his album 2 The Max, proving his enduring appeal and influence in the music world.
